Christmas Day falls on a Friday and the Boxing Day bank holiday moves to Monday 28th, so many sites will sit empty from Christmas Day until Monday 4 January.

## The 12 security tips of Christmas

Over a long shutdown a building can go days without anyone noticing a forced door or a burst pipe. Run through these before you lock up.

1. Test and set your alarm
   Check it sets cleanly and keyholder details are current.
2. Walk the perimeter
   Gates, fences and fire exits locked and undamaged.
3. Remove temptation
   Laptops, cash and stock off site or out of sight.
4. Frost-protect the heating
   And know exactly where the stopcock is.
5. Check CCTV is recording
   Cameras live, clear and viewable remotely.
6. Clear bins and pallets
   Combustibles against walls are an arson risk.
7. Lock internal doors
   Slow intruders down and protect key rooms.
8. Switch off what you can
   Unplug non-essential equipment and chargers.
9. Leave some lights on timers
   An occupied look deters opportunists.
10. Secure vehicles and keys
    Fleet keys locked away, vans emptied of tools.
11. Update your contact list
    Someone reachable on every day of the closure.
12. Book guards and cover early
    Festive patrol and guarding slots fill up fast.
