The question is not whether a role is mixed, but whether the duties, priorities and supervision are strong enough to protect core security activity. Security may be combined with concierge, access control, facilities checks, contractor management or basic administration. Some of these models work very well. Others create confusion because the role has too many competing responsibilities. ## What multi-skilled security looks like in practice It can include reception plus security, concierge plus access control, patrol plus FM support, gatehouse plus admin, or out-of-hours security combined with basic facilities checks. None of these are automatically poor models. The issue is whether the site has mapped the duties well enough to keep security activity clear when operational pressure increases. ## Where this can work well Multi-skilled roles often work better in smaller or lower-complexity environments, where duties are clearly mapped, supervision is strong and security priorities remain protected. In those settings, blended roles can be commercially sensible without losing operational clarity. ## Where it starts to become risky Risk tends to rise in public-facing sites, higher-footfall environments, sites with multiple access points, busy front-of-house settings, weak procedures or overloaded lone roles. In those contexts, the operating model can become stretched quickly if security responsibilities are not clearly ranked and supported. ## Why duty hierarchy matters One of the clearest ways to stabilise a mixed-role model is to define primary, secondary and tertiary duties. That makes it easier for the team to know which tasks must never compromise patrol, challenge, access control, monitoring or incident response. A visible presence alone is not enough if the duty hierarchy is unclear. ## Questions organisations should ask - Which duties are genuinely primary, and which are secondary or tertiary? - What security tasks must never be interrupted by service or support work? - How clear is the escalation route when competing demands arise? - Does supervision reinforce the role, or leave too much to individual judgement? - Are procedures and out-of-hours routines specific enough for the real site profile? ## How SPS reviews this SPS can help organisations review role clarity, operating model design, supervision, site-specific procedures and out-of-hours resilience in practical terms. Risk increases when the role absorbs too many competing demands, when security tasks are routinely deprioritised, when supervision is light and when there is no clear hierarchy of duties during pressure points. How should I assess whether a multi-skilled role is working?
